What’s a Haircut Have to do with Marketing?

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

I’m probably not going to get much sympathy from the Telly Savalas types out there, but, while I getting a haircut the other day, I got frustrated that as the hair was cut and falling onto the smock that covered me, there sure was a lot of grey.  For years now, I’ve been watching the cut hair get whiter and whiter.  It didn’t help matters any that the smock they used on me was black - talk about contrast.  Then I had a thought.  If the business were to pay attention to this, they could enhance my experience (minimize my sensitivity) by using a white smock.  Then, I would either not notice as much, or, perhaps with what little none-grey hair I have, it may even show darker than it is.  I shared with the person cutting my hair my idea.  I suggested that as they sit you in the chair, they choose an appropriate smock color.

In marketing, it’s all about the experience.  This is a simple example and an inexpensive way to show they are thoughtful and to enhance their customers experience.  Sadly, everyone is so busy working in the business, they often overlook simple ideas that mean a lot.
